Pflugerville Solar Farm
RRE Austin Solar broke ground on Wednesday, December 15,  2010 on the Pflugerville Solar Farm, a 720 acre solar farm which will be the largest in the nation with more than 400,000 solar panels.

We're excited to have Pflugerville Solar Farm break ground because it continues the direction that our City began many years ago in regards to being earth friendly," City of Pflugerville Mayor Jeff Coleman said. "Pflugervillians, like most Central Texans, have a high degree of concern about the environment, and we are honored that Pflugerville was selected as the site for the largest solar farm in the nation."

The project is expected to create approximately 350 construction jobs over the next two to three years in addition to the potential to attract other related environmental businesses to the area.

Located off Manda Carlson Road in Pflugerville's extra-territorial jurisdiction, through an agreement with RRE Austin Solar, the City of Pflugerville will not annex the farm for 30 years, and RRE Austin Solar will install for the City of Pflugerville and the Pflugerville ISD up to $750,000 worth of solar panels for public facilities under a special financial arrangement. In addition, the City of Pflugerville will receive an anticipated $2.5 million over the term of the contract.

In addition to funding, the Pflugerville and Elgin School Districts will receive solar instructors to help teach and promote green energy.

The farm will produce 60 megawatts of energy at any given time which is enough power for approximately 40,000 homes.

Energy from the Pflugerville Solar Power Plant will be sold through electric providers. Power from the solar farm is expected to enter the Electric Reliability Council of Texas power grid in the fourth quarter of 2011. Residents interested in "green energy" are encouraged to ask their individual electric service providers for more information.

The Pflugerville Solar Farm allows Pflugerville to continue its commitment to the environment. Pflugerville has embraced a green initiative with closed-circuit solar and wind panels installed at Lake Pflugerville in 2010 and in Heritage Park at the Green Red Barn in 2004. The City also oversees a Drop by Drop landscape rebate program for residents. In addition to the Pflugerville Recycling Center, the City expanded curbside recycling which picks up all plastics 1-7, paper, cans, and glass. Then in 2010, Pflugerville hosted its first Earth Pfair to educate residents on the ways that Pflugerville is showing its commitment and reducing impact on the environment.
