What is Citizens Police Academy?
The Citizens Police Academy is approximately 45-hour block of instruction to give the public a working knowledge of the Pflugerville Police Department policies and operational practices

It consists of 16 classes, held once a week, for 2-3 hours and is a prerequisite for participating in the Citizens on Patrol Program. The instruction is comprehensive, covering a different area of police work each week. Certified police officers, supervisors and civilian personnel with particular expertise in a specific organizational function will conduct each instructional block. There will also be guest instructors in certain areas.

Who may attend?
The class is made up of a cross-section of the Pflugerville community. Any interested citizen, who works, resides or owns a business within the City limits or in the extra territorial jurisdiction of Pflugerville is encouraged to attend. Applicants, who are selected, must be 18 years of age.

The Purpose of the Academy
The Pflugerville Citizens Police Academy provides information to the community enabling them to make, so that they may make informed judgments about police services, police activity and why the police do and can not do certain things.  The instruction is designed to increase police awareness whereas to dispel suspicions and misconceptions and to increase police/community rapport through this educational process. The Police Department, in turn, becomes more aware of the feelings and concerns of the community from the participant's interaction and input. This is a very valuable two-way learning experience. Completing the Citizens Police Academy is also a requirement to participate in the Citizens On Patrol endeavor.

Topics

• The Pflugerville Citizen Police Academy covers diverse topics of training such as an introduction to communications, operational issues pertaining to criminal investigations, criminal law, accident investigations, patrol procedures, evidence/forensics, narcotics, officer safety,

D.A.R.E., crime prevention, dispatch, communications and 9-1-1. Other topics include domestic violence issues, juvenile law, use of force, suspicious activity and victim services.

Citizens on Patrol provides:

• Citizens with an active means to make a difference in their communities.
• Increased cooperation between citizens and the police officers.
• Assistance to the Police Department through additional observation and reporting.
• Increased code enforcement.
• Increased public presence in the neighborhood as a means of deterring crime.
